September was wear yellow for Suicide Prevention awareness month, but going into October we switch over to the color pink with Breast Cancer awareness month. Every year an estimated one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This disease claims many of women’s lives, and takes over their’s and their families as well.

No one knows exactly what causes Breast Cancer.  Even though we do not know exactly where it comes from, we do know that breast cancer is always caused by damage to a cell’s DNA. There are some myths associated with the cause of Cancer. These include Caffeine, Deodorant, Microwaves, and Cell Phone usage. None of these have proven to increase a woman’s chances of getting Breast Cancer. In certain women’s genes however, they may have a family history of Breast Cancer which can increase their chances of developing it.

Paradise Valley has many ways to show it’s support for the fight every year! During October many students wear pink on designated days to show support for a loved one, or just to support the cause. Every year the Cheerleaders wear pink bows and cheer with pink pom-poms at the football games! Many years in the past the Football players have worn pink socks to their games in support of the fight, and Volleyball wears “Dig Pink!” shirts and even have a whole “Dig Pink!” night!

Ultimately the best way to show PV’s fight against Breast Cancer is to remind their loved ones to get checked. Women can test themselves at home with the methods listed at http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/breast-self-exam , or by visiting their doctor for a Mammogram. Women are advised to perform a self-check at least once a month, and get a Mammogram done once a year.
