With hundreds of comic book characters spanning thousands of different ideologies, finding one to describe this year and its events can be near impossible. However, the comic book hero, Batman, most accurately describes the people and events of this year. Like Batman, this nation wants to do right, but does it in the wrong ways. Similar to Batman, this year has been torn with good morals practiced in wrong ways (e.g. Black Lives Matter). While they have good morals and want to end the world’s racial prejudice, they have turned many people away and caused riots and panic in the street.

The Dark Knight is one of the most influential and iconic characters in all of comic book history. His troubled past and anger-fueled attacks on criminals have plastered the image of him being judge, jury and executioner for Gotham City. Similarly to “The Bat”, today’s society shows many of those same aspects. Many people today act as if their opinion is the only thing that matters, often times criticizing or antagonizing others with differing opinions. One of the biggest, and most dangerous examples is the Islamic code and, most importantly ISIS. As of this year Isis has become one of the biggest threats to the worlds, and the Sharia law as well. The lack of progression in female rights, and religious doctrines that dominate the culture. The punishment for lack of belief can lead to instant death, in most cases in horrific ways. Similar to Batman, the “wrong” decisions can lead to broken bones and major concussions. The Bat and the ISIS regions take criminals lives, their idea of criminals, into their own hands, in a dangerous game of tug of war.

Gotham City can also be a metaphor for the society we live in today. With the proliferation of crime and poverty America has been cracked and torn nearly into a  civil war with the Black Lives Matter Movement. With a few crooked cops comes thousands of angry African Americans and other respective minorities. With so many conflicting opinions, many people in the Black Lives Matter movement themselves can’t agree on certain points. Over and over again, the people of this nation are torn at the seams, pushing good people to do terrible things. One such example is the cop shooting that took place in Dallas, Texas. Similarly, the bombings in New Jersey and New York, show time and time again that more acts of terror are being committed in this nation, and every time it happens the people become less affected by such dangerous acts.

Out of hundreds of comics and heroes, The Dark Knight can easily describe the shattered nation that was once proudly named The United States of America. However all is not sober and cruel. While The Batman is a vigilante, there are many positive effects of his presence, and in parallel to America, there are still good people here. There are still those who speak for the silent and fight for the weak, seeing both sides of the story, and struggling to keep America a place “With justice for all”.
